Can you answer this question: Keeping your Smile for a Lifetime, are YOU on the path? As you will see in coming posts, there are many moving parts to keeping your Smile Healthy and the rest of your general health.

So why is keeping your Smile vital?

It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to add years to your life. In a recent study with over 5,600 older adults for 17 years, this is what they found:

  1. If you never brush at night, the risk for death is elevated by 20 to 25 percent, versus brushing every night!
  2. If you never floss, it increased the death risk by 30 percent versus flossing daily!
  3. Not seeing a dentist in the past 12 months increased the death risk by more than 50 percent, compared to those getting dental care two or more times per year!

You will live longer if you have all or most of your teeth. So who figured this out?

Dr. Charles Mayo founded the Mayo clinic on Sept 30th, 1889, and back in the 1930s, he made the statement, “People who keep their teeth live on average ten years longer than people who lose their teeth.”

So how did he figure this out? The Mayo Clinic had wards for each specialty, cardiac, rep, digest and, so on. He discovered that patients who had the same surgeries on the same day went home faster than others. What he found was those who went home sooner had their teeth. They had better chewing, digestion and, nutrition. They were healthier when they came in and healed faster afterward, and went home sooner. He then did longevity studies to discover we will live longer with our teeth, on average 10 yrs.
